Some hot stuff to look forward to...

...on this cold Tuesday morning -- but first a disclaimer: We had some internet trouble Sunday night so If you saw this already the only thing new you need to know is the dinner menu is a few paragraphs down.

It's an all blues double-header weekend with Roanoke's Fat Daddy Band at Ellington Fridays and the incredible Coco Montoya Saturday Night.

For those unfamiliar with Coco Montoya take a moment and read the following then check out his web site for more information. (On a personal note I’m amazed and amused that this leg of his tour goes Philly, Pittsburgh, LYNCHBURG, Charlotte, Saint Louis. Aren't we special.)

Now on to the plagiarized stuff:

"Blistering contemporary blues...piercing attack, funky, shivery guitar tones and aggressive, soulful vocals" -Blues Revue

"In a world of blues guitar pretenders, Coco Montoya is the real McCoy. Be prepared to get scorched."-Billboard

Over the course of his 30-year career, guitarist and vocalist Coco Montoya's explosive guitar playing and soul-driven voice have propelled him to the upper reaches of the blues-rock world. From his early days as a drummer to his current status as one of the top-drawing guitarists and vocalists on the blues-rock scene, Montoya has forged his reputation through years of hard work and constant touring. And it all started with a chance meeting in the mid-1970s with legendary blues man Albert Collins, who offered Montoya a gig as his drummer. Albert took an immediate liking to Montoya, becoming his mentor and teaching his new protégé secrets of the Collins "icy hot" style of blues guitar. Five years later, John Mayall happened to catch Montoya at a jam session and was blown away. This led to Montoya's touring the world for ten years with the legendary Bluesbreakers. Since stepping out as a bandleader in 1993, Montoya has released four solo albums and has performed non-stop at clubs, concert halls and major festivals all over the world. At every show, fans' jaws dropped, and critics raved about Montoya's mind-bending guitar licks and impassioned vocals. "The fiery blues that issue forth from Coco Montoya's guitar are awe-inspiring and boogie requiring," shouted The Village Voice. "Blistering, pure blues," cheered Blues Revue. Now, with Can't Look Back (AL 4885), Montoya turns up the intensity with another dose of his feral, soul-stirring music.

Here's Saturday's dinner buffet menu:
Roast Pork Loin with Andouille Sausage & Black Currant Sauce
Pan-seared Chicken Breast with a tomato and sweet pepper sauce
Creole-style catfish with a corn & okra relish
Sweet Potato Mousse topped with a bourbon cream

Ellington Fridays is being blessed by an anonymous donor who is making it possible for us to have one of Roanoke's oldest and most favored groups, The Fat Daddy Band. Ellington Fridays start at 5pm and go to 8.30. The $5 admission at the door includes a light buffet.

Here's what I plagiarized about Fat Daddy:

Since 1995, The FAT DADDY Band from Roanoke, Virginia has been delivering exceptional blues to the valley and beyond. The latest rendition of the band is the effect of many strange twists and circumstances that can only happen to, “A Blues Band”. Kerry Hurley, Vocals. Founder Greg Desaulniers, Bass & Vocals. Hoppie Vaughan, Guitar & Vocals. Tom Reviea, Drums & Vocals.

Firings, fist fights, flat tires, are only a few of the red-hot frying pan adventures that have delivered The FAT DADDY Band from just “A Blues Band”. This blues band really does love what they do as documented in their fourth CD release, “LIVE & LOVIN’ IT”.

The FAT DADDY Band won the Charlotte Blues Society's Talent Competition in Aug 2001 and was a finalist at the International Blues Challenge 2002 in Memphis, TN, where they were named as one of the top 6 unsigned blues bands in the WORLD.

The FAT DADDY Band has performed at some of the country’s most respected blues clubs such as, THE DOUBLE DOOR (Charlotte), BOURBON STREET BLUES AND BOOGIE BAR (Nashville), CAJUN’S WHARF (Little Rock), SAVANNAH BLUES BAR (Savannah), THE TOBACCO COMPANY (Richmond), J.M. RANDALL’S (Williamsburg) MAC’S ON MAIN (Columbia) DANNY’S BLUES SALOON (Oklahoma City), GOODFELLA’S (Hampton), SASSY ANN’S (Knoxville), THE CLUB JAZZ & BLUES THEATRE (Roanoke)

The FAT DADDY Band’s success has allowed them to open for such national acts as THE FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS, TRAIN, SUSAN TEDESCHI, CRAVIN MELON, ZACKK WYLDE, the legendary NIGHTHAWKS, and BOBBY MESSANO AND NEW BLUES ORCHESTRA to name a few. The special Chemistry of The FAT DADDY Band is what sets them apart. Labeling their Blues music is not hard. The band mixes their original music right along with the greats of contemporary and traditional blues artists such as B.B.KING, HOWLIN’ WOLF, MUDDY WATERS, JOHN LEE HOOKER, LOUIS JORDON, FLOYD DIXON, and ELMORE JAMES.

The FAT DADDY Band released it’s 1st CD in 1997 “Back Where I Started From”, the 2nd CD “Attitude” in 2000, the 3rd CD in 2003 entitled "From The Soul", and in 2004 the afore mentioned “Live & Lovin’ It” You can learn more about The FAT DADDY Band by going to http://www.thefatdaddyband.com
